I don't know that when I wrote to Mr. Shandly about this bill it was a bill which was pending in the house. It was pending in committee, and referred to the Committee on General Laws. So I was told. Mr. Conover had not before I wrote that letter explained to me why it was that either he or the interests he represented desired to have the bill reported or passed through. He said not a word about that. I wrote just what Mr. Conover asked me. IIe stated to me what he wanted I should write. Mr. Shandley answered that letter in person. It is not a fact that I am mistaken about the bill being then pending in committee. All I know was what I was told by Mr. Conover. All I knew about it I got from him. Q. Did you write any letter in June, 1882, after the Did you Legislature had adjourned, to anyone concerning bills 281 258 which were then before the Governor awaiting his signature? A. I did. And I did understand that Mr. Conover was interested in having the Governor sign the bill about which I wrote. I think that Mr. Conover said he was interested in having the Governor sign it. and it was because he was interested in having the Governor sign it that he asked me to write the letter. And that letter was written for the purpose of forwarding or securing that object. I do not claim that during all this period from 1876 to 1886 I had any other contract with Mr. Conover than that to which I have testified upon this trial.
