Elsewhere, also, the delicacy, aplomb, and exquisite finish of the performance--a more unique one we have never heard--gave evidence not only of scholarship, but deep insight into the text, of a by no means ordinary writer. The violoncellist vied with the pianiste in Mendelssohn's variations, and Sigr.or Piatti's pizzicato would have evoked murmurs of approbation but for the golden maxim--"The greatest homage to music consists in silence." To say that we prefer Madame Goddard as an interpreter of the "Kreutzer" sonata to other eminent artistes, would be to utter an untruth--to flatter where flattery is superfluous, because eulogy is extorted as a just due. The bravura passages were, we thought, more effective than the cantabile themes, and, in the delicious lists of dialogue (or aWlogue) between the companion instruments, we noted occasionally a certain indecision--analogous to the hesitating timidity of bashful maidenhood--in the responses of the pianoforte. As a whole--and we always shrink from minute criticism--the performance was worthy of this noble pair of artistes. Signor Joachim surpassed himself, and in the famous trtmolo variation of the andante, was honoured with a salvo of applause that amounted to an encoie d'estime. On Monday the "Popular Concerts" will conclude, and the Director takes his benefit. The programme is adapted to all tastes, and includes great varieties of style. MR. HENRY LESLIE'S CHOIR.
