Not illustrated. 1895 edition. Excerpt: ...note, by the chorus of a piece of solo is weak. We mention this, as frequently in pieces sent for review the same fault occurs. Some difference in close or in modulation is always advisable. Three vocal duets. For female voices. By A. E. Horrocks. (Augener.) These are: --"The skylark's wooing," " April showers," and " Hill-tops." To graceful and refined words by Mrs. George Byron, Miss Horrocks has written most dainty and charming music. It is a pleasure to become acquainted with them, and we recommend them unreservedly. Crossing the bar. By A. T. Robinson. (Novello.) Apparently this setting of the late Poet Laureate's stanzas, which by the way are getting just a trifle wearisome, is intended for use as an anthem. It is doubtless suitable for special occasions, although the music is rather monotonous, largely due to the fact that in almost every cadence the third is at the top in the final chord. Hast thou not heard. Anthem. By H. R. Jackson. (Weekes.) If not showing any great originality, this anthem is at any rate effectively planned and smoothly written. It is well suited to choirs of average ability. Praise to God, immortal praise. Anthem for harvest. By F. H. Stokes. (Novello.) A musicianly piece of work, abounding in melodious and vigorous counterpoint. As befitting the occasion, it is bright in character, and rendered by a competent choir should prove highly effective.
