Not illustrated. 1917 edition. Excerpt: ...material itself 3.----As a means of controlling uniformity in the prepara-tion and manufacture of materials In the preparation or interpretation of any specification for bituminous road or paving materials, an appreciation of the interrelation of tests and test limits is as necessary as an understanding of the individual significance of the tests themselves. For example in the requirement for penetration of asphalt a common range of value is between 40 and 60 with a number 2 needle and a load of 100 grams acting through five seconds. The amount of penetration depends largely upon the bitumen content and on the light oils in the asphalt. In a pavement subjected to heavy trafiic a penetration of about 40"is desirable for the asphalt used and greater than 45 should not be used. Again, the ductility of the asphalt may have a range in value Value of Such Requirements Purpose of Tests of Bituminous Road Materials Significance of Variation in Value of Penetrative Requirements for Asphalt Ductility Require-ments for Asphalt Miscellaneous Requirements Scope of Cost Data on Construction Required from 30 to 100, depending upon mineral matter present, heat ing temperature and other elements. Certain high-grade natu ral asphalts may have as low a ductility as 30 and be quit suitable, while oil asphalts with a ductility below 70 may b looked upon with suspicion. The reason for this is that over heating of oil asphalts materially decreases their ductility am seriously affects the quality of the product in so far as its suit ability for use in road work is concerned. Ductility require ment values must always be considered in connection witl those of other requirements in the specification. Discriminating tests and specifications for bituminous ma...
