Mountains, Rivers and Soldiers : For God and the World- A Novel
Mountains, Rivers and Soldiers [for God and the World] is a novel that tells the stories of characters from five generations. The incidents in the novel happen in the 20th century. Most of the incidents happen before and after the Indian Independence struggle. The novel is set in India, U.S.A. and U.K. Most of the incidents happen in Kerala, the southernmost state of India. Characters from generations 1 and 2 live in a village called Elikkulam near Kottayam in Kerala. Characters from generations 3, 4 and 5 live in Thiruvambady and Thottumukkam, places in the Northern districts of Kerala. Most important characters in the novel are Mani, Kunjootty, Immanuel and Sr. Nancy. Sr. Nancy, daughter of an American Missionary couple in India, falls in love with Kunjootty, son of Mani. Immanuel, son of Kunjootty and Nancy, dedicates his life for India and the world in the Kargil war 1999. There are also a lot of other characters who make this novel an interesting one. Stories of characters such as Cheruchakki, Karinthandan, Col. Redfern, Neelandan, Thadikkuzhi David, Aleyamma etc. make the novel discuss issues such as colonialism, caste system, patriotism, communal violence, exploitation and ecological problems. Written as a Historiographic metafiction, the novel deals with historic incidents like the colonization of India, Independence struggle, 1921 Moplah revolt, the murders of Mahatma Gandhi, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi and the 1999 Kargil War between India and Pakistan.

About Binoy Varakil
Binoy Varakil was born in Thottumukkam, Kozhikode, Kerala, India. He started his teaching career in St. Joseph's College Devagiri, Calicut in 1998 where he is currently working as Assistant Professor of English. He got commissioned in Indian Army in 2010. Born in October , Voice in the Wind , Stone Rivers , Birds and a Girl , A Sparrow, squirrel and an old tree  and Here is Light  are anthologies of poems he has authored.
