Excerpt: ...and, as is shown in the illustration, means are provided for transmitting some of the heat from the exhaust over to the opposite side of the motor, to the carbureter. The crank case is made of aluminum in two parts and encloses all the gears and the two cam shafts. Cooling.--Cooling of the motor is effected by the use of a newly designed radiator of the honeycomb type which is claimed to be suspended in such a manner that all shocks and vibrations to it are eliminated. The water pipe leading from the radiator to the pump is secured at the lower left hand corner and the cooling water after passing through the pump is distributed to the cylinders at the lowest extremity of the water jackets by pipes running at right angles to one another. After the water is circulated around the cylinders it is emitted at the top and carried back to the tank. Lubrication.--The lubrication is fitted to the dashboard and is mechanically operated by the two to one shaft and supplies a definite quantity of oil to all of the cylinders, crank bearings and wrist pins at each revolution. Ignition.--The circuit making and breaking devices are operated from a cam shaft which is supported in bearings cast integral Plan View of Chassis. with the upper part of the crank case. Four pivoted rockers, carrying hardened steel rollers at one end which are acted upon by the cams, operate the vertical lift rods. The current is supplied by a low tension Sims-Bosch magneto, which is carried low down on the exhaust side of the motor, and is driven off one of the cam shafts through gears, and on the same shaft which drives the centrifical water circulating pump. Carried above the motor are four small insulated plugs which provide a means for testing out the different cylinders. The spark...show more
