Motocross On-Air covers the complete series of races from their inception in 1963 to the end of the series in 1970. There is a full description of how motocross got started on the TV, the people and characters involved - including the ever popular Murray Walker - and considerable detail on the TV aspects. Each and every race is described in detail in a way which fully reflects the challenge, excitement and fun of the racing itself. All the results, compelling stories about the leading riders, and some of the best motocross photos ever taken are all included. But Motocross On-Air also highlights some of the more compelling aspects of the popular culture of the day from the new and different TV programmes hitting the nation's screens to the Beatles and the moon landing! A real walk down memory lane. Motocross On-Air has over 200 of the most compelling motocross photos ever taken, most published here for the first time, and all taken by the top professional photographers of the day. The photos alone make this book a compelling read. The Grandstand Trophy, awarded to the champions in both the 250cc and 500cc/750cc classes every year from 1963 until 1970 was, next to winning the National Championship, by far the most prestigious motocross competition. It gave both riders and the motorcycle manufacturers the oxygen of publicity! The Grandstand Trophy attracted the best racers of the day including Jeff Smith, Dave Bickers, Chris Horsfield, Vic Eastwood, The Rickman brothers, Dave Nicoll, Arthur Lampkin, John Banks, Alan Clough and many more who all shine through these pages. They in turn mesmerised and inspired a generation of youngsters with their skill and courage into a lifelong interest in more

About Ian Berry

Like so many of his generation, Ian Berry was first introduced to the joys of motocross when, in company with his family, he tuned in to the BBC Grandstand programme. There he discovered a fast-moving, captivating sport, and was immediately hooked as he listened to the incomparable Murray Walker providing the frenetic commentary that complimented the remarkable display of riding skills on display. This 'baptism' clearly had a lasting effect on the youngster, who would go on to attend meetings in his native East Anglia at such time-honoured venues as Wakes Colne, Cadders Hill, Lyng and Hadleigh during the heyday of the sport in the 1960s and 70s. Indeed it was memories of such happy outings, rekindled by watching VHS compilations of racing from this period, that prompted him to try his hand at writing. This was in the late 1990s and the rest, as they say, is history! The photo shows Ian at the launch of his first book Out FRONT! in 2010. He lives with his wife and two children near Lisbon, Portugal, where he works as an English teacshow more
