Montreal East (in French: Montr al-Est), is a town in southwestern Quebec, Canada on the island of Montreal, formerly part of the borough of Rivi re-des-Prairies-Pointe-aux-Trembles-Montr al-Est. Montreal-Est has consistently been the home to many large oil refineries since 1915.Montreal-Est was originally founded in 1910 by businessman Joseph Versailles. On January 1, 2002 it was merged into the City of Montreal. It voted on June 20, 2004 to demerge and was re-established as a town on January 1, 2006. It was the only community in the eastern half of the island that voted to demerge. Montreal East Mayor is Robert Coutu.
