Review Text

The turbulence of English-French relations regarding the Mohawk Valley underlies this well paced adventure story of Alan Carey, the son of an illustrious British officer. Alan while a Cambridge scholar, discovers fear for the first time when he is forced into a duel; faced with the actual possibility of death, the young man suddenly finds that he is filled with terror. His father, wishing to allow his son's reputation the healing tonic of time, suggests he leave for the colonies where he will oversee the family's holdings. There, in the Mohawk Valley, violence once more menaces?? Alan, who is determined to prove himself worthy of the Carey name. He heroically participates in combat with the French and their Indian allies. Having brilliantly acquitted himself, free once and for all from the threats of French domination, he looks enthusiastically forward to a life in this new land which, with his own manhood, he has defended. A lively story which contains a good picture of factions and circumstances of the times. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
