Description

This volume brings together most of Lawrence's major early styles and themes, and they include his first published story, four realistic tales from his years as a teacher in the suburbs of Edwardian London, and three sketches of mining life written during the composition of "Sons and Lovers". Five reviews and travel essays reveal his burgeoning interest in psychology, religion, and art during the pre-War years, a time of dramatic change in European culture. Experimental stories like "The Overtone" and "New Eve and Old Adam" anticipate his greatest literary achievements, "The Rainbow" and "Women in Love". This collection shows Lawrence's development as a master of realistic short fiction, and it traces the growth of his distinctive vision of relations between men and women, of social and economic life, and of human nature in general. It complements his first three great novels and his collection of short stories, "The Prussian Officer".show more

Review Text

A sure market for Lawrence material, this will be the mainstay of this collection of material collected since his death, but much of it published in magazines before his death. There is one long-short story; the rest are of average length, - seven in all. Read New Eve and Old Adam for the high spot of the book, for the average reader. Two in the vernacular will prove somewhat difficult for many. The rest are good entertainment, and varied in content and form. A book that all who want to know Lawrence from all sides will want to own. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
