Excerpt: ...about the area, and in your magnificence--and while, as I hear from Mr. Bowden to-day, you have been getting rich, and piling up the coin--Methodism sends to that land and to that immense area four men--to those millions of people, with those diversities of tongues, and those thousands of miles to travel; and when we go express, we do it at two miles an hour, with ten oxen. Do not send to me to retrench, for I will not do it. It is little enough you have given us so far, and I do not know how you would havo given us anything but for good Mr. Harvey. If you want anybody to retrench in this interior mission, I will become a supernumerary, and will get a snug berth at home. You know, though we are but few men in that district, I was afraid the Missionary Committee would have a balance on the wrong side to-day, for they have positively sent me out two men to reinforce the staff, and the only comfort about it is this: that the quality of the men makes up for the smallness of the quantity. I had not been long in the Transvaal before I discovered that God had been preparing our way, that He had been opening the doors for the third and the last time for Methodism, and I had hardly got myself settled in Pretoria before the tidings flashed through the land, by means of native runners going from tribe to tribe, saying, "The fathers of the Methodist Church in England that is what they call your Committee men have sent a great father to take care of the natives in the Transvaal and the regions beyond."
