Review Text

Not long before he died Faulkner opined that Wolfe, himself, Caldwell and Hemingway, in that order, were the great U.S. writers of this century. After reading Last Day of Summer and Mamma Aimce, perplexed readers may think that Faulkner was referring to Taylor and not Erskine. To be sure, Mamma Aimce will not go begging in paperbacks, for it is a very model of professional confidence in plot and stereotypes. Everything joins expertly into a last paragraph climax that, for silly grisliness, would leave Mickey Spillane smiling benignly. The story is about a poverty-nearing widow who lives in a mansion and supports a family of deadbeats. These include a familiar catalogue we'll skip here, except to mention that her moronic adult son has raped a six-year-old Negress. Readable, yes; memorable, not a bit. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
