The dimensions of t ese piers are given in tl lowing tabular statement: The superstructure of Coal Pier No. 1 has been removed. Pier N o. 2 has not been used since Pier N o. 4 was completed Pier No. 3 is used only for supplying bunker coal. Coal Pie is of recent construction and is very efficient. This pier_is i and concrete constinction and is 90 feet high. The handling on this pier is" somewhat different from the method in opera the Virginian Railway Pier, which was the first modern coal tr at this port. The chief difference is that at pier No. 4 the p are raised to the top of the ier by an electric elevator and n an incline as is the case at t e Virginian Railway Pier. The adop ted at the latest Chesapeake & Ohio Coal Pier (No. 9) at l News is the same as that used at Pier No. 4 of the Norfolk & l Railroad. ' Merchandise Pier No. 1 has a pier shed of frame construct: story in height, 703 feet lone, and 140 feet wide.
