Excerpt: ...of those females who depend on their needles for support, and to produce some efforts to relieve them--as also to remove the deleterious prejudices that prevail against benevolent and assistance societies, so sedulously fostered by certain political economists--prejudices admirably calculated to harden the hearts of the wealthy, who are gravely assured by those economists, that instead of acting-meritoriously, they are doing an injury to society when they perform the sacred duties of "feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, and clothing the naked." To use the emphatic language of the Quarterly Review. "Posterity will scarcely credit tho extent to which the popular reeling has been worked upon and warped by the ravings of some of our modern economists. They, truly, have done all that in them lay, To Extinguish in The BOSOMS OF THE MORE OPULENT CLASSES, EVERY SPARK OF GENEROUS AND BENEVOLENT FEELING TOWARDS THE DESTITUTE AND NEEDY PAUPER. In their eyes, pauperism is a crime for which nothing short of absolute starvation can form an adequate punishment." Under this impression he has been desirous of having an edition published for distribution in Boston, New York, and Baltimore--and took it for granted, that some of the benevolent citizens of those cities, (he principally relied on New York) would cheerfully defray the expense of it. But he was mistaken. He suggested the matter to three or four gentlemen of great wealth, and of well-known liberality in regard to other objects, who received the proposition with coolness--and shrunk from any contribution.
