She was kept end on against the wharf by means of the propellers, without any moorings at all, during the first couple of months' work. Latterly mooringpawla were put on each side of the boat, and by means of ropes she was kept close to the wharf and the engines were allowed to stop. The traffic was landed and embarked in that way without any trouble. With regard to the recesses, one was cut into the quay wall on the north side of the river and the other was a piled erection on the south side; with these no difficulty was experienced in handling the boat, even in heavy floods and in high winds. Before those were adopted, the engines were kept going almost continuously, with an unnecessary expenditure of coal. The height of the lift in the "Finnieston" was 15 feet 3 inches. It was true that the rise and fall of the Clyde was only 9 or 10 feet; but in very low tides, with an easterly wind, the water sometimes went down 2 or 3 feet more, so that the 15-foot lift was needed. The beam was 43 feet. By increasing the beam the same stability could be secured with a lift of 20 feet. Indeed, he thought it would be possible to make a platform to lift 25 feet, with sufficient breadth of beam. The Woolwich ferry was no doubt very complete, and well adapted to carry on an extensive traffic; but his view was that there should be a fixed piling running out into the river the same distance as at present, instead of a long bridge or floating pontoon.
