Minnetonka is a suburban city in Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States, eight miles (13 km) west of Minneapolis. Its 2010 population of 49,734 makes it the 17th-largest city in Minnesota. The word "Minnetonka" comes from the Dakota Indian mni tanka meaning "great water." The city is home to Cargill, the country's largest privately owned company and United Healthcare, the state's largest publicly owned company.According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 28.2 square miles (73.1 km )-27.1 square miles (70.3 km ) of it is land and 1.1 square miles (2.87 km ) of it (3.83%) is water. Part of the city includes the Eastern tip of Lake Minnetonka, one of the largest lakes in Minnesota. The outlet of Lake Minnetonka is Minnehaha Creek, which winds through South Minneapolis before ending at Minnehaha Falls and flowing into the Mississippi River.
