I was not a success at that business, but gentlemen, I wish to say, considering the importance of mining to the world, there is no business known to mankind or its industry that is superior to that of mining. There is more capital employed today in the business of mining, taking the world over, than in any other single business. It today yields more for the benefit of mankind than any other business. We are today producing from the precious metals more than the world has ever seen in all its history for a year. The best statistics, aud I don't propose to give you a statistical record tonight, save that the past year has put into circulation in the world over two hundred millions of the precious metal. The world has never seen such a production. We have been some thirty or forty years in this country endeavoring to cultivate the business of mining. While it may be said it has been in its infancy, it has done more to give prosperity and stability to business than any other class of industries, and we might predict for it a future that has almost no limit. Than any other business in this country, east, west, north and south, mining today commands more confidence, more profit from the investment of capital than any other branch of business. It depends on the men engaged in that business whether that confidence shall be protected or sacrificed. Now it is well known that capital was afraid, that capital was timid, but it has been demonstrated that there is no business that has not its contingency; even the farmer depends on the rain that descends upon his crop, and every other business alike has to pass through contingencies.
