Excerpt: ...of the houses, weeping women stand gazing out on the wreck of the village with eyes blinded with tears, straining to see if the cart they have sent for the "children" is arriving with its precious freight. On go the struggling horses, bravely breasting the waters, starting aside as the broken fences and planks struck against their legs, and at length the three horsemen are beside the waggon, in which are placed some twenty little children; and at the upper window of the school-house stands Edith, lifting tenderly down to the men in the waggon a tiny, screaming, frightened child. Some ten or a dozen more are clinging screaming to her; but, with a calm face--calm, and still, and lresolute as it is in her own drawing-room--she takes the little frightened things, one by one, and hands them to the men in it. Over and over again they have conjured her, for Mistress Medlicott's sake, to come away herself; but she has smiled down on them with a glanceiof supreme contempt, and said: "What! and leave these helpless children here? For no one's sake on earth!" And so, obeying her orders, given with such calm and cool command, they went and got a waggon; and she, gathering the poor, frightened' flock into the upper room, told them stories, with two or three of the smallest on her lap; spoke of Him who walked on the water as on dry land, and who was caring for them now; and that, if the kind men in the waggon could not carry them home, He would, and that would be better still. She saw the Duke and Prescott before they saw her; and as they came beneath the window she said, in a cool, cheerful voice: "Are you come to help me with my poor babies?"
