Excerpt: ...none of the four comprehended the paradoxical physician, so imposing in his appearance, so profound in his learning, and yet, so dull in his perceptive faculties, and so sluggish in his movements. Hydro-cephalic to some extent in his infancy (like Curvier) his brain-box had been enlarged so as to admit of the development of his brain in time to an exceptionally large bulk, making it a vast storehouse of impressions rather than a workshop; and not to be converted into a factory of cerebration until fired by one or other of the great passions of the human body which, when enkindled commonly produced a general conflagration of the nervous tissues. His age was that of a Dumbarton youth--six and thirty; and, having been born with a silevr spoon in his mlouth, he had done little in life but feed his big body and big brain with the best of physical and mental pabulum--the latter including a full course at Yale, a similar at the Medical Department of the University of Pennsylvania, a special course in the physiology and pathology of the brain, and a similar in microscopy, followed by several years of study of the miscroscopic organism of the ocean. And it was more, perhaps, to pursue this special study while traversing the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, than to minister to the mind's disease of the great tragedienne, that he presented himself as an applicant for the position of surgeon of the steam yacht "Rhododendron." And when he appeared on board with his baggage, the astonished captain was obliged to give him two staterooms to accommodate his grand proportions and his extraordinary store of books microscopes, jars, nets, and dredging apparatus.
