Review Text

For the peace shelf, next to Wondriska's Tomato Patch and Anita Lobel's Potatoes, Potatoes, another fable about a warrior who exchanges his sword for a plowshare. In this, a retelling of an old Japanese tale, a mighty but unhappy prince who is hated and feared by all his people is given a bag of seeds by a little girl. He works hard planting and tending his seeds until one spring morning when his flowers bloom, they bring him joy and love for his people. The tale is effectively told, though the turning point, completely lacking in conflict or motivation, seems peremptory even for a fable. The novelty here is provided by the illustrator, whose misty black-and-white brush paintings give way on the last page to an abstract bloom of muted but glowing color. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
