In this office his labors were arduous, well directed and successful. Indeed, it has been as Superintendent of Public Instruction that he has become especially known as a. man of broad views, accurate thoughts, and an earnest successful administrator. His six Annual Reports, making an aggregate of over four hundred pages, aside from their local and temporary objects, express truths and opinions worthy of careful study. They have greatly aifected public opinion on educw tional matters. He has given to the public a valuable compend of enlarged and explained by original notes. A second edition of this work has been published with more notes, and thus he has contributed more than any one else to produce system and uniformity in our schools. Dr. Gregory has published several addresses, at the request of the audiences, among which may be mentioned " The Soul and the Truth," addressed to Sunday School teachers in 1853; " The Relations of Normal Schools to the Public Schools," delivered at the dedication of the new building of the State Normal School at Ypsilanti; an address before the American Institute of Instruction in 1863, entitled "The Problem of Education;" a Eulogy on President Lincoln, and several others. Comparatively few, however, of his addresseson education have been printed. He has been in labors abundant, and all over the State is well known for his active work in Teachers' Associations and other educational meetings.
