A letter from Dr. Bayard Holmes, Professor of Surgery in the University of Illinois, Chicago, and Secretary of the Association of American Medical Colleges, is as follows: I wish I could put a copy of the Bertillon classification of the cause of death in the hands of every one of my graduating students. The form of your supplement is not good for the student to keep in his pocket, but if you could send me 150 copies I would have them distributed with some explanations. VVhat Dr. Holmes has done should be done in every medical school in the country. The revised version of the Bertillon classification will very soon be obtainable in an English translation from Dr. Valter Vyman, Supervising Surgeon-General of the United States Marine-Hospital Service, Wasl1ington, D, 0., and we presume a request for copies for the use of medical students will receive prompt and courteous attention. No more effective work could be done for the furtherance of vital statistics in this country, than to educate young physicians as to the practical importance of such work. It lies at the foundation of all public health activity, and our sanitary methods are now often sadly crippled by the lack of reliable mortality statistics.
