Review Text

Professor of Michigan State University has previously written Mexican Revolution: Genesis under Mudero, (1952), regrettably a much more successful work than the present one. While the material is all here, it comes across in a ponderous fashion and with an uneven distribution of proper emphasis. Coat herding literally receives as much space as the Mexican steel industry and the book eccentrically scants the Mexican economy in general-surely an important element if the subtitle a "struggle for modernity," is to be exemplified. On the other hand, the author gives a very good account of the Revolution itself but this is available elsewhere. The relative failures of the work are particularly disappointing since Professor Cumberland is one of the most knowledgeable men in his field. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
