Not illustrated. 1887 edition. Excerpt: ...hearers had received anew the lubrication of love, and there was neither friction nor jar in the soul's trust, under the overshadowing presence of the Holy Spirit.. "Perfect in love" was a carefully guarded jewel of high est value in the Christian's coronet, remote equally from frozen ritualism on the one hand, and wild, unscriptural ' fanaticism on the other hand. That state recognized all of human weakness, only to magnify and rejoice in the riches in Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit. It was a humble, trustful, yet truly earnest, faithful witness that "the blood of Jesus cleanseth from all sin"--present, progressive, tireless cleansing, till the Church triumphant was gained. The gracious requirement and provision that we can "love the Lord our God with all the mind, soul, and strength, and our neighbor as ourself," had not in its precious experience a single drop of Pharisaism that proudly in word or thought thanked God "it was not as other men," and sneered at the penitent publican already receiving mercy from God. On the contrary, the higher, "perfect love" climbs heavenward the more self-righteousness is ignored, and more tenderly and entirely does it cling to the mercy and grace of God through Christ Jesus. "The witness of the Spirit" was one of the dearest family jewels of early Methodism ever present in pulpit teaching, relation of "experience," and in the hymns and joy of household praise or public worship. These phases of religion, in holiness of heart and consecration of life, made the hymns of the Wesleys, as well as their sermons and writings, such potent "evangels " of "the truth as it is in Jesus...".show more
