Excerpt from The Messenger, 1940
IT IS with pride that we recognize an alumnus of The West Durham School who has made such a worthy record of achievement. For several years Mr. Phillips has been a popular member of the Social Science Department of Durham High, and in addition to classroom duties he has served as adviser of the Blackwell Literary Society, assistant adviser of the Debating Teams and of the Hi Y Club. He is also prominently connected with both local and State educational organizations, serving as Treasurer of the Durham Teachers' Credit Union, member of Durham Teachers' Advisory Council, Vice - President of Durham Classroom Teachers' Association, President of North Central District Class Room Teachers' Association, and President of the Social Science Department of the North Carolina Education Association.
