'Ihe surveys under the sixth contra'ct were made under the authority Of the Commissioner's letter of the 30th June, 1848, directing the resurvcy 0f township No. 12 north of the base line, in range No. 2 east of the 4th rincipal meridian, in the State 'of Illinois, and has been paid for by th@ ' Preasury Department. ' The six contracts given in this statement are the same reported by, predecessor as unfinished at the date of his last annual report. Ulldtif this appropriation has been surveyed 2,873 miles 16.86 chains, at a QOSI-of $9,138 09, leaving unexpended the sum of $861 91. of the apportionment of $10,000, to be remerged into the general appropriation of_ $115,000.made August 12, 1848. The seventh contract given in the second part of the statement llas. fbeen let out under my directions, and is to be paid out of the app0l'l10U' ment of $10,000 to this district under the general appropriation of $115,000 made March 3, 1849. '1'11 surveyor will take the field as soon as the: requisite bonds are executed, and the return of his surveys under 11115 contract will complete the work of connecting the 'Missouri surveys with-the recently established boundary line between these States and west Of-the St. Francis river.
