The first thing you will notice about “Meritropolis” by Joel Ohman is the name itself, MERITropolis. Or maybe, like me, you won’t see it right away. My brain read it a different way in the beginning, but only a few chapters in and the sly take on the name grabbed me – and made sense. MERIT….. Because everything in this city of 50,000 is based on Merit, or your worth to society. More brutally put, it’s based on The System, a ranking system that people had agreed to abide by years ago in order to revel in the semi security of the walled city. 12 years prior, mankind had suffered a self-induced cataclysm, an Event that changed the landscape and left those remaining destitute and lost. Gathering who they could, a city was built and The System devised. There is limited food in this wasteland, limited resources. They had enough for 50,000 people…. No more. How to weed out the moochers or those no longer helping to maintain the city? A ranking system that gave you a number, printed on your right forearm. The higher the number, the better your standing. Edge close to 50, and you become what the inhabitants dub, gate-bait. If your number lowers below that threshold, your use to society is gone and you are placed outside the gates – a death sentence by anyone’s reckoning. The Event left animals spliced together, war torn men and dangers of all kinds. These poor souls offered the outside world have been zeroed…. And will soon die. It’s a brutal brilliance. This book follows the life of The System and those that live under its harsh dictates. High Scoring Charlie, his friend Sven, Criminal king Chappy, Commander Orson and so many more. The System affects them all – and this is their tale. Imaginative and devastating, Ohman has crafted a terrifying world of mixed animals and bureaucratic efficiency. Rebellion lives… will they?show more
