Review Text

Another coven-ant with the devil? Mephisto Waltz is a danse not so much macabre as foolish which tells how an aging concert pianist encroaches on Paula and Myles before he dies (suddenly) and later usurps Myles' body and his hands in particular. Myles now plays a demon piano and he also fingers Paula savagely in bed. Then there's the death (also suddenly) of their little girl with some greasy kid stuff on her forehead-oil. And when the wolves materialize (one mangled the dead artist's wife; others are in the environs) Paula cries wolf but no one listens. . . . All of this is so extravagantly overplotted and cheaply written that you'd have to be a goose to get goosebumps. The publishers think otherwise and are of course sponsoring it on the premise-presumption that Rosemary has had another baby. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
