The first time that I filled for her to drink, I poured the water over her instead of into the glass. The defect of my extreme short sightedness, joined to the agitation I always felt on approaching her, made me appear devoid of all comprehension of even the simplest things. One day she bade me bring her some rouge and a small cup of water, which were upon her toilet table. I entered her room, where I stood bewildered, without knowing which way to turn. The Princesse de Guise chanced to pass through, and, surprised to find me in such confusion, asked: " What are you doing here? " " Oh! Madame," I exclaimed, " rouge, a cup, a toilet table; I see none of them. " Touched by my distress, she put into my hands the objects, which, without her aid, I should have sought in vain. Iwill tell some more of my strange blunders, which fell little short of imbecility. Madame la Duchesse du Maine, being at her toilet, asked me for some powder. I picked up the box by the cover, it dropped, naturally, and all the powder was spilled over the dressing table and upon the princess, who gently remarked: " When you lift anything, you should take it by the bottom. " I remembered this lesson so well that, a few days later, when she asked for her purse, I took it by the bottom and was greatly astounded to see a hundred louis, which it contained, roll upon the floor. After this I knew not where to take hold of anything. I spilt as stupidly a package of gems which I seized exactly bythe middle.
