Seventeen year-old spirit medium Emily Chambers has a problem. Actually, she has several. As if seeing dead people isn't a big enough social disadvantage, she also has to contend with an escaped demon and a handsome ghost with a secret past. And then there's the question of her parentage. Being born an entire year after her father's death (yes, a year) and without the pale skin of other respectable English ladies, Emily is as much a mystery as the dead boy assigned to her. Jacob Beaufort's spirit has been unable to crossover since his death several months ago. It might have something to do with the fact he was murdered. Or it might not. All he knows is, he has been assigned by the Otherworld's administrators to a girl named Emily. A girl who can see and touch him. A girl who released a shape-shifting demon into the mortal realm. Together they must send the demon back before it wreaks havoc on London. It should be a simple assignment, but they soon learn there's nothing simple when a live girl and a dead boy fall in love.

Our customer reviews

The Medium is a really great read, and free on the iBooks store. I was pleasantly surprised by just how enjoyable this book was. Being a short read there's certainly no points in the book that are dull. Celia and Emily are two sisters who conduct séances in order to help ghosts cross over to the "otherworld". When Celia lets lose a demon in the real world, a ghost called Jacob Beaufort comes to their assistance - sent from the waiting area - to help them to return the demon back to where it was summoned from. Emily is a very independent and strong-minded girl of 17 and the books follows her journey as she struggles with her feelings towards Jacob, a forbidden fruit in the realm of love for her. Jacob, on the other hand, seems to have several secrets that he's keeping from Emily, only a few of which we discover in The Medium. He's a strikingly good looking man who seems to be the perfect gentleman - what a bugger that he's dead. The plot shifts and swivels and throws several ideas at you as you go along, leaving you to find yourself guessing at what will happen next, and frustratingly puzzled over the circumstances around Jacob's death. Celia is the motherly figure of the book, as the sisters are living alone as their mother is dead and the paternal situation is complicated. This allows the story to have more freedom to explore things like demonology and the otherworld without infringing on typical expectations and social conducts of this era. George is another character we are introduced to - so if you love the historical side of things, he definitely brings it, and also draws the snobbishness into the book. The plot itself is very engaging, involving ghosts, demons, romance, social classes, historical settings, crime and servants - there's certainly something for everyone. The concept that this book introduces about the afterlife is also very interesting and some solid food for the imagination. Overall it's a great read, so if you're looking for something quick to get into and something with some serious tension when it comes to forbidden paranormal relationships - this is probably for you. I know that after finishing this book, I'm certainly keen to buy the second!show more
