Excerpt: ...While doctoring the Snook child up the alley, his driver, sitting demurely on his box, stands before the Crook mansion on the avenue, at length tires and walks his rig up and down, during one of which peregrinations the doctor quietly slips in and is driven off--while people at the neighboring windows wonder who Crook'; new doctor is, and how strange they did not see him come out. Some of my own peccadillos--though I am as near perfect as can be----I will here confess in this connection, though they were practiced long after this period of my life. It used to be a source of worriment to me at first when my reception room was filled up. I used, in such cases, to hurry off my patients. But I got over that after having discovered that the time spent in the reception room by my patients was devoted to telling each other how they had been to this and that doctor without relief, and how I had helped them the first time. After this came to my notice I encouraged it by causing my patients to wait as long as possible. All the reprints in pamphlet form of articles I had written I spread on the tables of the reception room. The journal that I edited lay temptingly at-hand (perhaps new subscribers might even be got). A 'book of mine which had met with quite a success in the medical world lay there too (maybe some one might take it into his head to buy a copy). On the mantelpiece photographs of prominent people were carelessly strewn with inscriptions and dedications to me written upon them--or not. The reader can not fail to perceive that even I--pure and high-minded as I was--fell into doubtful practices.
