A nice translation but the book depository got the description of this edition wrong - its not a hardback but a tiny 4x6inch pocket book that could be read comfortably with a magnifying glass!show more

"Many of the comments on this English translation of the Arabic Qur'an imply that translation of the Qur'an into English is not possible but that an interpretation is possible. This kind of remark makes it appear as if Arabic is a non-human language that expresses ideas that no human language can express. While it is fair to say that translating Arabic into English will mean a loss of the rhythm and rhyme that is present in the Arabic it is simply not true to say that Translation is impossible. The claim that it is imporrible to translate the Qur'an into English is a common myth without any grounding in the reality of Arabic and English as human languages. Another point needs to be made here too, Abdullah Yusuf Ali provides an excellent form-equivalent translation that is fairly readable in English but a much better job of translation into natural English is possible, so when reviewers suggest that this is a reliable translation while a more function-equivalent translation would be less reliable they are not being accurate. Function equivalent translations are frequently much more accurate than their form equivalent counterparts. Having said that; this particular translation is of uniformly good quality and the accompanying notes are very helpful. This translation is worth 4 stars."show more

"This edition is a 'personal size' edition, which means that it is small and has small print. The Print is about 6 point, which will be rather difficult for all but the young to read without using a magnifying glass. The paper is good quality, the binding is typical paperback 'perfect binding' meaning that it is glued rather than sewn in. This edition is also a modified version of Abdullah Yusuf Ali's translation. The editors/publishers have changed "God" into "Allah" and have altered many other words (compare 5:51 in this edition and in the edition from Tahrike Tarsile Qur'an Inc.). The notes are also altered - possibly to reflect a more Wahhibist (Al-Wahh) perspective. The reader should be aware of this because it does change the tone of this work. All things considered, this edition deserves only 2 stars for the quality of its printing, print size, binding, and edition-specific changes to the text prepared by Abdullah Yusuf Ali. This review refers to the edition with ISBN: 1590080165"show more
