In the traditional Maori maramataka, or calendar, the new year begins at the time of the first new moon after Matariki (the star cluster Pleiades) rises in the early morning sky. In earlier times, each tribe used their knowledge of the stars and the phases of the moon to plan daily life. When to plant and harvest, when to fish and to gather foods, when to weave or to meet; all these things were based on the natural cycles of the stars and of Papatuanuku, or Mother Earth. Te Papa's Matariki Maramataka runs from June 2006 to May 2007. It is packed full of proverbs and korero on the traditional Maori maramataka and illustrated with pictures of Te Papa's precious taonga, images from contemporary Maori life and scenes of Aotearoa New Zealand through the seasons. Above all, it pays respect to our ancestors, honours their knowledge, and is our gift back to them. Around New Zealand, Matariki is a time of great festivity, as well as reflection and planning for the year to come. In 2006, we celebrate Matariki at Te Papa with a focus on technology and innovation.
