She placed a hand on the ornament caressingly, but the slender, skilled fingers were busy. Lucene, however, already annoyed by her interview with Walter, was in no mood to be patient under the impositions of this woman who posed as her mother, and she drew her arm away quickly. "No; you sha'n't have it," she declared, spiritedly. "Why, dearie!" Mrs. Blount cooed, placatingly, the heavy lids drooping low over her big, slumberous eyes.
