It is not necessary for anything to be new to be valuable. So with the treat ment of syphilis. I do not suppose that away back, centuries ago, before Amer ica was discovered, the effects of mer cury were understood, nor did our im mediate predecessors know why they gave calomel for everything. Professor Samuel Jackson of the University of Pennsylvania used to say when in doubt give calomel and when it has been properly given it has cured many a disease, without our having compre hended the reason.
