But that night she took heart of grace, and told hei little story. "I thought I ought to have no secrets from you, mother," sbe said, looking very good and demure; how the widow thrilled and trembled over her girl's recital! The next day she went out alone, and took that walk again. She stood for a long time on the bridge that led to the ivied archway of the Beguinage. "And you refused him! yon actually said no!" she exclaimed. Now, indeed, her girl was a woman. "What could I do? One is not obliged to accept people because they ask one," returned Dollie, a little loftily. The narrative had excited her; it sounded better in the retrospect. "Of course I was sorry, and I told him so," she went on, feeling all at once as though she had acted very creditably--after all she had not done so badly.
