Leaning over the cart, he raised the coarse sacking that covered the straw, disclosing thus a piteous sight. For there lay Mary on her face, deep buried in the straw, as though she had striven to dig for herself a hiding-place in the floor of the cart. Either hand clutched full of yellow stalks, struck forth above her head; and all her shoulders and waist were covered with a tangled dusty mass of hair, that glowed red and tarnished as the pure sunlight touched it.
