Brown is an American geographer on the faculty of the Georgia Institute of Technology. She is a member of the National Commission on Energy Policy and the Tennessee Valley Authority board. She previously worked at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where she held several leadership positions. Brown has published widely in the field of energy policy and technology forecasting. In 2007 she co-edited Energy and American Society: Thirteen Myths with Benjamin K. Sovacool. Brown has assisted U.S. House of Representatives and U. S. Senate hearings as an expert witness. She sits on the editorial boards of several academic journals and associations such as the Southeast Energy Efficiency Alliance, the Alliance to Save Energy and the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy.
