Review Text

This is a comfortable, lenitive novel full of whatever beneficences you might associate with a "good read" and it pursues its unremarkable course from the late 19th century through World War I when life, if simpler, was no easier. Certainly for humble people in a county village like Jonathan Winter who makes the first step upward from gardener to postman hopeful that the next generation will get further. This is the story of his two marriages: to Myra, his first cousin and girl of his youthful dreams (and visions of marigolds) who survives one terrible childbirth, then, while Jonathan is away in the Boer War, freezes to death in a snowdrift - trying to get milk for her children. This gives Anne-Louise; strong and self willed, the chance she has always wanted to appropriate Jonathan: and while she succeeds and marries him, she never quite possesses him although she almost does destroy the children of his earlier marriage..... Of its traditional kind - faithful to the period and to the characters consistently cast and upheld - a quite readable book. Try the Delderfield audience which keeps this corner of forever England forever green. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
