To-day since business has begun to see the power of thought and words in determining the success of business, business itself is demanding that a man dress his thoughts neatly and becomingly as well as himself. In other words, business is demanding a command of simple, exact, and forceful composition. In the exact words of a great financier the demand is: "Good English to the business man is simple English, English that is listened to, English that is read, English that is understood, English that produces." Better English in business, then, according to the standards of business men and not altogether according to the requirements of English theorists, calls for a vocabulary, a sense of style and tone, and a capacity for thinking clearly and organizing ideas. Business makes no call for slovenly and lazy speech, for misspelled and mispronounced words, for bad grammar and improper conventions, and it makes no call for glaring inaccuracies in construction and in organization. To be sure, the business man, really the man who follows the profession of business, uses, to the highest degree and to the greatest effect, this command of language in his letter-writing, which is a fine art. To produce a letter with a personality--indeed with a soul--a writer must summon all the cumulative culture which he possesses. He must do more than pick a few words from the dictionary and jumble them together on an eight-by-eleven bond.
