Review Text

Further in the lives of those at Great House (1955) and the same aura of graciousness and spaciousness persists as this family chronicle is continued. The Judge, at a distance, and Reniera, more closely, keep a watchful eye on the lives of their children; on Susan, who has married Pieter, a doctor, but fills the too frequent hours when he is away with careless flirtations; on Beau, their runaway son, who returns from South Africa to face up to the consequences of a criminal act- the unintentional killing of a man; and on Mandevilla, their newly discovered great niece who may be too fragile for the scandal of her parentage. Always protective of Mandevilla, Reniera fears that the reckless Beau will harm her further, tries to prevent the intense relationship which develops between them, until- chastised by the Judge- she realizes she must extend trust as well as love to Beau..... For those who liked the earlier book, this sequel follows along the same leisurely lines and provides a pleasantly companionable form of entertainment for women. The South African setting is contributory. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
