There are first the busy, wholesome and helpful men and women who do not come often enough. These are the sweet, sensible and considerate persons, whose presence means joy to the invalid. Then there are the anxious, nervous folk, who by their every movement betray their excited mental state. The sick man may ordinarily like these people, but he is always glad when they leave his room. Then there are the ultra pious brethren, very often sisters, who effervesce with religion, and simply exude spiritual quotations. They have a perfect understanding with God, and know exactly why you are sick. For a long time they have been wanting to tell you just what has been revealed to them concerning you. They recite their little speech flatly and dogmatically as if they had just emerged from the council chamber of Infinity. Sometimes a pompous, purely physical and self-satisfield old brother will bombard you with a Scripture quotation. You know he is just a parrot and you feel like throwing a Bible at him. Then there are the dear, ignorant souls who wish to comfort but do not know how. One sat by my bed, when all expected me soon to pass over the river, and gave me this bit of cheering experience: "I had an old aunt that had that aire spinal trouble fifteen year."
