Review Text

For Llewellyn's latest novel he turned to a place 'up to its neck in oral history of the most bizarre kind'. Out of his three years living in a semi-detached castle on a crag above the estury of the Blackwater, one of Ireland's great rivers, has grown The Malpas Legacy, which delves deeply into the island's psyche and its long, brooding, tenacious memories. The story is told by David Walker, English post-graduate student in psychology. Night fishing, illegally, from the end of a derelict pier, he almost involuntarily rescues a half-drowned young woman, little realizing that his impulsive action is to revolutionize his life, threaten his future career and place his life in jeopardy. Helen Costelloe is the unwilling inheritor of a great estate in the country with a dark past and doubtful future, to which David is lured partly by his growing obsession with Helen, partly by a search for a subject for his thesis, which he fortuitously discovers in a revelatory series of casebooks written in the early part of the century. As he works, the past increasingly comes to dominate the present, which adds its own problems: feuds, resentments, vengeful jealousy, high drama - and politics; so that with every passing day the threats to David and Helen spiral towards unstoppable catastrophe. Llewellyn's style, fresh, often dazzling and quirky, lights fires in the reader's imagination. The characters move on and from the pages into our heads, and their voices will echo long in our ears. A writer to watch, he makes demands on the reader - but rewards them. (Kirkus UK)
