An intense effort by a small team of individuals resulted in the construction of the world's largest non-military laser, in Edmonton Alberta. Read this entertaining book to explore the world of high power lasers. Dr. Merchant was one of the team building the laser, so he's writing from first hand knowledge. He has been praised for the ability to express complex phenomenon in a language that ordinary people can understand. He applies this ability to write about the various components of a high power laser system, the constituent parts that make it more

About Dr V E Merchant

V.E. (Vivian) Merchant has more than forty years of experience with pulsed and continuous CO2, Nd: YAG and ultraviolet lasers. The experience includes the Ph.D. thesis work investigating chemical reactions induced by frequency-tunable, short-pulsed, and mode-locked carbon dioxide lasers, building high-power laser systems for pipeline welding, and diagnosing laser output to optimize laser-materials interactions. His management skills have been applied to directing research and development teams at a technology transfer institute and in the application laboratory of a major laser supplier. This work included developing laser transformation hardening and laser cladding applications to protect surfaces against wear, erosion and corrosion in the resource and defense industries. His problem-solving skills have been applied to spectroscopic analysis of plasmas, welding of pipelines, sealing of electronic components for heart pacemakers, developing conditions for cladding of compressor and marine valves, and setting up production for laser hardening of oil patch components. Dr. Merchant has several times been involved in the start up of new facilities; including specification and installation of laser welding equipment and establishing welding procedures in a new factory making a new implantable medical electronic device. Dr. Merchant's technical expertise coupled with his communication skills led to his invitation to be an associate editor of and contributor to the Handbook of Laser Materials Processing, a contributor to the Ninth Edition of the Welding Handbook, and a contributor to ANSI/AWS standards including Recommended Practices for Laser Beam Welding, Cutting, and Drilling. He has written many technical reports for clients, and more recently has produced two books, The Art of Building Lasers and Majestic Laser Systems - a History, with two further books in preparation, Laser Paint Stripping and Related Applications, and Laser Decontamination of Radioactive more
