Review Text

From a 19th-century English translation of an Irish imramha (voyager) manuscript of about 1100, Reeves retells the legend of the young Maildun (or Mael Duen) who sales beyond the Western Isles to seek and kill his father's murderer. With his crew of 60 plus an ill fated extra three, Maildun is "guarded and guided by an unseen power" through fabulous islands of peril and bounty where he encounters monsters, feasts, and - on one opulent isle without age or illness - a queen who ensnares him until one of the three doomed sailors cuts her magic thread and dies. There are bits of Druidism and large chunks of Christianity mixed in with the primitive wonders in this tale that ends to contemporary satisfaction when Maildun learns that "Vengeance is God's" and takes the hand of his father's repentant slayer in a "firm and brotherly clasp." Though not one of the few grand firsts of Irish folklore, this well retold narrative is of interest both for its own simple story's sake and for comparison with other better known odysseys.
