Description

In this first book of a new series, Too Woo, the teaching Owl, explores the Magical World of Butterflies. From migration to butterflies in space, rarely has such fun learning and activity been packed into one small book. We learn about the life of Butterflies from the egg through caterpillar, chrysalis and finally the beautiful winged miracle that is the result of a magical process. The dangers these creatures face and the surprising help some get. New ideas, words and natural processes are explained with full color illustrations, a combination of fact and fun images, all based on the author's watercolour paintings. Learn why Latin and Greek are important to scientists and why they thank Carl von Linne for a great idea. There's a story about a greedy spider, tips about explorer's kit, pages to colour, a quiz and space for notes. Included are print and web resources that will help to develop and nurture the interest this book will create. The series, "Exploring with TooWoo" looks at the natural world in a fresh way that will stimulate interest and a desire to learn. The combination of words and pictures make even difficult concepts and words accessible and engaging. The books manage to be both thought provoking and fun, stimulating the reader to enquire further and providing a foundation for a lifetime interest in the creatures that share our world. Although listed for Grade 4 (9 to 10 year olds) the book has a wide appeal from Grade 3 up to Grade 6 (age 8 to 12). It's a great book to read and share with Children as young as 5 years who love the illustrations and greedy spider story. Please check for other titles in the series."show more

About Sir Evelyn Wood

Evelyn Wood was born in Ruislip, then a village but now a suburb of London, England. He dropped out of art school and spent some years working in agriculture before settling down to a career in business. He has authored numerous articles on a wide range of subjects but now concentrates on writing for children. He has always been fascinated by the natural world and its infinite variety. In this series, he combines his love of art and storytelling with a quest for knowledge. The result is a format that will engage children and encourage them to learn about the world in a fun way. He says" As a boy, I spent hours watching the Puss Moth caterpillars that lived on the Willow tree in our garden. They are handsome creatures and, I was told, could spray acid from their two tails if attacked. This early fascination stayed with me during a career in agriculture and business. I've been fortunate to have lived and worked in a number of countries in Europe, Africa and Asia each with wonderful fauna and flora to discover. I hope this small book will spark a similar interest in children keen to explore the natural world." He now lives in London and fills his days writing, painting and cooking. He is still as curious as when he was young and believes no one should go to bed until they have learned one new skill or fact during that day.show more
