Review Text

Flaubert is best known for this novel about a country doctor's wife. He rarely wrote more than a page in a day because he was such a perfectionist he could never leave a sentence alone. This English translation conveys the mood and style of the original. Of all his work, this is the most accessible and memorable as the author records the 'lice-grey' lives of the provincial French. In doing so, he succeeded in creating an unforgettable heroine and a groundbreaking novel that illuminates the tragedy of ordinary lives overwhelmed by impossible desires. (Kirkus UK)show more
