In Madam C.J. Walker Builds a Business, Sarah Breedlove (AKA Madam C.J. Walker) reinvents and rebrands herself as a forceful entrepreneur whose products still dominate the black hair care industry today.
Born on the same plantation where her parents were once enslaved-Sarah is the first child in her family born free. When Sarah is just a girl, she learns the value of hard work. She cooks, she cleans, she picks cotton, she does laundry, and she babysits. By fourteen, Sarah is a wife and by eighteen she is a mother. From the stress of backbreaking labor and having to grow up so quickly, Sarah's hair begins to fall out! Instead of falling into despair, Sarah learns how to take care of her hair and invents her own recipe to encourage her hair to grow.
But Sarah has a problem. She can't get people to buy her products at first. So, she rebrands herself as "Madam C.J. Walker," a fancy high society lady with the authority and know-how to help black women with their hair. As Madam C.J. Walker, she builds a business empire, dominates the black hair care market with her natural products, and offers opportunities for other poor washerwomen in her community to have a path to financial freedom. With her immense wealth, she treats herself too. She buys herself cars, fancy dresses, and a mansion with 34 rooms!
This is the story of a leader in the hair care industry, which is now a multibillion-dollar industry, but it's also a tale of the importance of empowering women to become economically independent.
After Words includes text on Madam C.J. Walker's lasting legacy today as well as educational activities on entrepreneurship.

ENGAGED COMMUNITY - Thanks to a supportive and active global community, Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls broke crowdfunding records. Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls 2 followed in 2017 and broke the record set by the first, making the series the highest funded publishing project in crowdfunding history. Since publication, the books have sold over 4 million copies and they have been translated into over 47 languages and are available worldwide. The Rebel Girls community counts on us to tell stories that help every girl in the world dream bigger, aim higher, and fight harder.
NETFLIX PRODUCTION - Netflix is set to premiere a limited series on Madam C.J. Walker's remarkable life, starring Oscar winner Octavia Spencer and produced by LeBron James.
DIVERSITY - Just 9% of children's books published in the US in 2017 featured African or African American characters -- according to data from the Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC) which has been measuring representation in children's books since 1985. The stories that children read at a young age tell them how to view themselves in the world and informs their hopes and dreams. A historic example of triumph, like Madam C.J. Walker, who succeeded against all odds is important, particularly in the US, given that approximately 50% of public elementary and secondary school children are from diverse backgrounds.
ENTREPRENEURSHIP - Modern technology makes it easier for entrepreneurs, and women in particular, to play a more active role globally. For female entrepreneurship, now is the moment. Books about entrepreneurs, and entrepreneurial types, can instill lessons about the hard work, creativity, and determination it takes to translate a vision into a reality. Biographical works help kids in this age range learn about the lives of people who struck out on their own, and in the process, broadens the notion of what it is to be entrepreneurial.
EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES - The book will include exercises and challenges for the young reader to start thinking about their own future in entrepreneurship.
FULL COLOR ILLUSTRATION - Unlike most chapter books for this age range, this title will incorporate at least ten full-color illustrations by Salini Perera. They will depict Madam C.J. Walker at all ages, the American Reconstruction Era, Madam C.J. Walker's marvelous beauty ads, as well as a number of settings that Madam C.J. traveled to for marketing her products.
