Bewley, Q.C., sat for the purpose of holding an inquiry into the circumstances connected with the attack on the procession which met and accompanied the Lord Mayer of Dublin on his visit to Derry on 1st November. The official notice of the inquiry was in the following terms, but the date given is an error for November 1st. It having been notified to the Government that on the 6th day of Xovember last, in the city of Londonderry, large numbers of persons assembled in the streets, and also in and about the City Hall, and that violent and inflammatory speeches were delivered, and serious rioting and breaches of the peace occurred, and his Excellency, being desirous that he should be fully informed as to the said several occurrences, notice is hereby given that his Excellency has appointed Piers Francis White and Edmond Thomas Bewley, Esquires, two of her Majesty's Counsel, to be Commissioners to investigate and inquire into and report upon the several matters aforesaid, and upon the several other matters in the Warrant appointing the said Commissioners contained, and for that purpose to hold a Court of Inquiry in the Courthouse, Londonderry, on the 14th instant, and thenceforward as long as may be necessary in that behalf, and to inquire into the circumstances of the said occurrences in Londonderry, and to hear and examine all such witnesses as shall appear before them in reference to the matters aforesaid. Mr White, Q.C.--My colleague and myself have been commissioned by his Excellency the Lord Lieutenant, as appears by the warrant just read by the secretary, to hold a Court of Inquiry in this city in order to procure the most authentic information as to certain riotous proceedings and breaches of the peace...show more
