Lovell Augustus Reeve was initially apprenticed to a grocer of Ludgate Hill between 1827 and '34. From 1842, he traded as a natural history dealer, selling mounted birds, shells, insects, collecting equipment and books from a shop in King William Street, Strand where he began publishing books on natural history. Reeve was the author of many publications on mollusc shells, the best known of which is Conchologia iconica, or, Illustrations of the shells of molluscous animals, which spanned 20 volumes and contained about 27,000 more
